I started JoeWrote a few years ago, but it wasn’t until I lost my job last fall that I began publishing twice a week. Since then, the results have been better than I imagined. My goal for 2023 was to get 1,000 free subscribers by the end of the year. I’m happy to report we crossed that threshold last week!
Thank you to all of you for lending me your time and attention. There’s no shortage of writers out there, so it’s an honor that you choose to be a part of my audience. In a world of toxic cultures and echo chambers, this community stands out as exceptional: you aren’t afraid to embrace new ideas and challenge me when you think I’m wrong. For that, I thank you.
I also want to take this opportunity to announce a new payment structure. Whenever I ask for reader feedback, the most common response is something along the lines of: “I’d love to become a premium subscriber, but I can’t afford it right now.”
I certainly didn’t start writing to make money, but the reality of our world is I need income to keep doing this. Ideally, everything I published would be free for all. But the catch-22 is that if I did that, I’d have to get a full-time job and couldn’t publish as much as I do.
To make my work accessible for you and fiscally possible for me, I’m starting a “Pay What You Can” format. Below are buttons that you can use to sign up for $1, $2, $3, $4, or $5 a month. My suggested price is $5 a month, just because I think that’s what my writing is worth. But please, choose whichever price level fits your budget! If you can only afford $1 or $2 a month right now, that’s totally fine.
I’ve also reduced annual prices by 20%, so you’ll get a discount on every price leve if you commit to a full year.
While this will help many free readers upgrade, I also recognize that some people can’t afford any extra costs right now. If that’s your situation, you can access JoeWrote premium FOR FREE via the referral program. Using the button below, you can earn free access when your friends become free subscribers to JoeWrote. By referring just 3 new readers to JoeWrote, you’ll get free premium access, your friends will be turned onto JoeWrote, and my readership will grow. It’s a win-win-win.
Use this button to get started.
Finally, you may notice that I changed the tagline from “Explaining and exploring socialism” to “Life through a leftist lens.” Changing the tagline actually came from a reader suggestion:
The only thing I can think of to improve JoeWrote is to broaden your own description of what you talk in your bio or stack description ie. it's more than socialism (which can scare people). I find that you the connect dots between the current state of affairs and our history through the lens of our economy, culture, even our psychology.
I completely agree with this, even though I didn’t realize it until I read this feedback! Hopefully, “Life through a leftist lens” better summarizes what I write about and continues to draw new readers.
Thank you all — without you, I’m just a crazy guy shouting into the void.
In Solidarity,
Joe
