I wouldn't say I'm shocked. They are unhinged. I lost all respect for the NYT after the 'Screams Without Words' scandal. They will go to great lengths to protect Zionism.
Thank you for sharing your analysis. It made me go and look at that NYT article, and read some of the 1.1K comments. Some, but only a small percentage, of the limited number of comments I read, were in support of the ideas in the article. The majority, again I do stress I didn't look at them all, were positive about Mandani, and optimistic about the future. Many making positive comments identified themselves as Jewish.
Even among some of those opposed to Mamdani, the issues were his inexperience, and concern for the economics of his proposals. The NYT may still be a reactionary rag, but their readership is no longer a monolith in support of their positions, if indeed they ever were.
And I think that their insanity boosts politicians like Mamdani. As you said, not everyone in those comments agrees with him on everything. But the typical reader is going to recognize that comparing his win to the Holocaust is insane, and will likely view him more sympathetically.
I'd also like to point out that, although there are all these craven, establishment democrats calling out Mamdani as being an antisemite, it's important to note that Rep. Jerry Nadler has endorsed Mamdani. It's important because Nadler, who is himself Jewish, represents "“New York's 12th Congressional District includes Manhattan's Upper West Side, Upper East Side, Morningside Heights, Chelsea, Yorkville, Carnegie Hill, Kips Bay, Roosevelt Island, Tudor City, Gramercy Park, Central Park, Turtle Bay, Hell’s Kitchen, Murray Hill, Lenox Hill, Theater District, Clinton, Garment District, Sutton Place, Midtown, Union Square, Times Square, Lincoln Center, and Stuyvesant Town.”
That's why I think this campaign boosted Mamdani more than it hurt him. Jake Tapper kept asking Brad Lander about Mamdani's 'antisemitism.' Audiences clearly say Tapper had an agenda, and the charges were disingenuous considering the highest-ranking Jewish NYC politician was endorsing him.
When I taught college, there was always one student who would come to me and say “a lot of us have a problem” with something (never understanding class material — which of course is good info to have — but more like a departmental policy I had no control over).
I’d always say, let’s talk about the problem YOU have. If other people are concerned, they are adults and can contact me themselves.
This is without fail a bad technique to use; name the people so you know the source of the conflict (like the NYT did, and you found out they’re idiots).
Trump didn’t, so you know it’s probably (a) all in his head, (b) stuff a couple of people told him and he forgot their names, and/or (c) he’s planting these ideas in his MAGA followers so they can carry them out into the world as something a lot of people believe (but you ask them who, and it will be “I don’t know, but I saw it on TV”).
It’s sad how far the NYTimes has fallen and honestly most of the American media. It was bound to happen when newspapers and news stations were bought by corporations who need to maximize shareholder value over actually being a news source.
It’s depressing as someone who studied journalism in school many years ago that “the paper of record” now just repeats the talking points of a country committing genocide instead of actually reporting facts.
My partner and I started rewatching the Sorkin show “Newsroom” and it is scary how much it is still totally relevant. There’s a reason the Broadway version of “Good Night and Good Luck” has been so popular as the story of Edward R Murrow vs McCarthy just shows how the corporatization of our news sources is not a “good thing”. It’s why journalists are flocking to places like Substack.
The scrutiny and parsing of every action and statement of Zohran, past and present, will only intensify as his core message continues to resonate and the movement build momentum. The oligarchs and the establishment politicians in both parties are deeply concerned but there's little that can derail his campaign. Never say never but he's a wonderful vessel for a truth that has been building and is undeniable.
No credible journalists are calling Mamdani a nazi. However, every socialist country has either started out as, or turned into, a dictatorship. Socialism is an inherently authoritarian ideology. Democratic socialism tolerates the existing capitalist system for now, but is always working to achieve state ownership of the means of production. Just read the platform of the DSA.
Would be good to give it a go don't you think? Does not the massive inequality, exploitation, and atomisation of society in this unbridled vulture capitalism (thanks Grace)and techno feudalism (thanks Yanis) not give you pause for thought? It's a pity the West went and stamped out socialism wheresoever it was taking root elsewhere in the globe because then we might have learnt something....

Good fucking riddance, indeed. Excellent article. Comparing Mamdani's win to Kristallnacht is unconscionable. The New York Times is scum.
I'm shocked they did that. It's barbaric.

Exactly. Not shocked at all.

This piece alone is worth a subscription. Thanks man, it’s good to be able to triangulate normalcy using your thoughts.
Thanks Richard! I appreciate the support.
"Triangulate normalcy" is such a good way to put it.

That “a lot of people” thing is bullshit.

It's so evidently disingenuous that I don't think it works very well. People have a better BS meter than they're given credit for!
I’m feeling verklempt… talk amongst yourselfs .. I’ll give you a topic. The free press is neither free nor a press 😆

Look for my next paywall article:
Why I Won't Sign With the Lakers.
I was a starter for my 7th grade church league team. I had considered teaming up with LeBron and Luka. Not anymore.

Love your work! Much aroha (love) from New Zealand.
Excellent article.

You’re really expecting fair, balanced, good-faith reporting from the Bulwark?

Including Rabbi Cosgrove in your analysis is next level scholarship. Wow!
