Wow. First time reading your column, thank you for this. I've experienced this with my own family, albeit different immigration cause and ethnicity. After having seen the Palestinian situation, it seems to me, unfortunately, that humanity never learns it's lessons, and we repeat the same things over and over again, so that the person who was formerly at the bottom of the ladder can at least be one step above the other guy. It's a sad commentary on human beings, but I feel is really a truth. Again, thanks for your insightful and thoughtful essay. It's so easy for the conservative side, because they can write or present issues in binary terms, while the left side can't help but to look at the nuance and gradations in situations. Thanks for your nuance!
Well put! It really is both depressing and shocking how we continue the cycle of putting another group on the "bottom rung" of the social ladder. Hopefully, one day we break it.
I had no idea there was such a thing as the DSA in the USA! Ironically, one of my most liked comments (elsewhere) was saying Bernie, Robert Reich, Ralph Nader and AOC should start a new political party. In my mind I was thinking 'Social Democrats' or similar might be a good name!! But heaven help me - can't remember which youtube channel I posted it on!! The left needs a much broader church right now to save America. Thanks again Joe. 😀
Yes, there are a handful of ethnicities who have recently been on both sides of the divide, with the Irish being quite prominent examples. I can see how remembering their past on the other side could be useful to breaking down racial barriers.
My father's family was centered in Oklahoma, his mother was from Alabama. My father, born in 1920 and several of his siblings looked like they might be the result of a native American, with black hair and a beak nose. They claimed ancestry as "French Canadians".
I jokingly once said, I guess that means we are related to any person that could have started in France, immigrated to Canada, and moved to Oklahoma.
And then along came 23andMe...
I'm 40% Irish/Northern English! So, to gain work and avoid "NINA" my father's people claimed "anything but Irish", better to be of American Indian descent than Irish. So sad.
Hilarious. I don't mind that you are entirely delusional, but i do mind that you think the rest of us are too. It must be exhausting to lie all the time like you do. You really think and know nothing real. It's hilarious.
Amazing how you and all the other pro-Hamas (sorry, pro-"resistance") anti-Palestinian poseurs are suddenly so anti-kidnapping since Mohamed Khalil. Quite the change from October7 2023 and every fucking day since.
People who are pro-Palestine have always been anti-kidnapping. For every hostage that Israel has released, they have captured two more. Hamas is releasing their hostages; when will Israel do the same?
Wow, you really know nothing real. It's hilarious. How ignorant are you to not know about the fact Israel swaps one Jewish hostage for tens of Palestinian criminals and murderers.
Why are all you Islamists and pro-Islamists such dishonest ignorant mentally ill losers and morons? Did they find you on a short bus?
The Palestinians Israel is freeing are not criminals, unless it is a crime to be Palestinian in Palestine, which you would certainly think by the way the IDF operates.
Too bad it's not a crime to kill Palestinians, as IDF snipers are daily shooting Palestinian children. Hamas pretty much only kills Israeli soldiers, but the IDF kills women and children primarily.
Petition for the immediate release of Mahmoud Khalil who was kidnapped from Columbia University.

Thanks Joy!
This is the post I wanted to write but couldn't. Thank you so much, Ireland forever ❤️ 🇮🇪

Just discovered you Joe. Superb post!!

I'm glad you found me, Tracy! I highly suggest checking out your local DSA chapter. They do great work.
So sorry Joe - I'm a New Zealander! 😊
lol I don't think the org has opened an Auckland branch yet 🤣

Dear Mr Mayall,

Interesting story! It's always wild when we see history through the lives of our relatives. It puts a personal face on historical events.
I don't know, Joe. What about the Black Irish?

Nope. But it is a crime in Israel to kill Israelis. You have to look to Hamas to see Islamists celebrating strangling infants and four year olds.
Not very bright are you? But you make up for it by being an utter ignoramus too. LOL.
