Yes, the largely flat country with a central government, a professional army which does most fighting against Russia, has popular support of it's citizenry, and who have managed to fight well against Russia, even pushing it back time and again is indeed comparable to a mountainous fractured country that has been rife with warlords, and has struggled to even have a government for decades before even US involvement in the late 20th century. And this assumption suspiciously does not rely upon a conception that a Ukrainian nation does not exist, which has been propagated by the Russian government. This article also does not suppose that the majority of Ukrainians are far-right politically, and have elected the far right en-masse since their independence from the Soviet Union (which it has not), for which they might then support some militias who identify as such.
Its difficult to articulate all the flawed (if not downright racist) assumptions required to even make this argument. But, if there was one singular flaw to point to, it would be the lack of any Ukrainians voices to this supposedly "anti-imperialist's" writings. You lay out not even a single Ukrainian's voice on this matter beyond a single quote from an unnamed militia. There is no mention of what the random resident of Kyiv wants, or any other number of Ukrainian civilians, government figures, workers, soldiers, and any other member of the nation's population, or even the Ukrainian armed forces who are doing the bulk of the fighting. Instead, its just using a past example as if it works in the present, when even a cursory glimpse at the state of Ukraine and Afghanistan should disabuse that claim. After all, if you haven't noticed, the fragmented infighting has been occurring Russian occupied territory, not in the land under Ukrainian control (see Yevgeny Prigozhin's mad dash to Moscow that launched many a meme).
And your statement on defending other Eastern European NATO members:
What was it again? Oh yes, "how many Americans would be willing to have their child die defending Romania, Slovenia, North Macedonia, or any other of the NATO member countries? Very few, including myself."
Who knew that when I, a Macedonian-American who has worked with my homeland's government, was pointing out Socialism's deficiencies in practice, I was in fact speaking to a man who'd let my people get conquered again just to spite "NATO." Something that it would not do, given that not only the alliance actively coordinates all the time to defend its eastern members, but the majority of Americans do in fact support NATO, and whose member states have continued to support Ukraine, even years on since the latest stage of the Ukraine war began.
The American far left never fails to let down my people. At least I know for certain now that you shouldn't be trusted to rely on helping us when we deal with the hungry Russian empire: times never change.
I sure hope no countries attempt to use this logic against the US. With the DHS labeling white supremacists as the greatest threat to the Homeland, no country would ever send us anything out of fear that those resources may end up in the wrong hands.
I think that's a bit backward. I'm not worried of US weapons falling into the hands of Ukraine's enemy (which I think would be the White Supremacists in your example?). Rather, I'm worried of what the Ukrainian militias will do with the weapons (turn them on Ukrainian state, attack Russian Civilians, etc.).
If Ukraine was facing an internal threat from White Supremacists Militias (like those operating in the Donbas) I would wholeheartedly support backing the anti-Fascist Ukrainian state.
Extremely on-point commentary, as always.
I'm glad you enjoyed it, but I always hate having to write about War.
So, this is your take on Ukraine.
