I would love to hear the thoughts of someone who is not a typical sports fan. What do you think about the treatment of March Madness players (or college athletes as a whole)? How often does this subject come up in your yearly life?
The older I get, the more offensive I find it that institutions of higher learning spend more time, money, and intellectual capital on sports programs that mean nothing in the end. I would go even further to posit that the distraction of sports has engineered our culture to think it zero-sum terms that has now infested politics, business, and morality.
I agree! I have to catch myself every once in a while when I'm watching college sports (particularly football) and remind myself, "Oh, this is supposed to be a school!" By any objective measure, they are professional sports teams!
