Particularly galling is that the media feel compelled to constantly attribute the soaring casualty count to the "Hamas-run" Gaza Health Ministry. As if to say, "take this with a grain of salt, people." Wink, wink. But it's been shown that with past Israeli attacks on Gaza, the numbers that the health ministry have put out have ALWAYS been verified by human rights and aid organizations as basically accurate. But of course, major "news" outlets like CNN are either too lazy or too complicit to report that.
It's really striking how as soon as the conflict started, the Gazan Health Ministry was infected with the "Hamas cooties" — like you said, the UN has relied on these numbers for years with no issue.
It's also important to state that, despite the insistence Gaza is lying about death figures, Israel has actually had to decrease the death count from October 7th.
Intellectual self defense should be taught in High School (perhaps Middle School) - ie. how to read/interpret and interact with all forms of contemporary media.
I completely agree. I have a friend who is a middle school teacher, and he's started showing CNN clips for the class to breakdown for media literacy. It's an incredibly important skill that all of us - children and adults - need to learn.
