Excellent article, Joe! I would add this: far from being ignorant, many of us protesting this war are aware of little things like the Leahy law. We want our country to respect and obey international law AND our own laws. Right now, the United States, through its proxy, Israel, is acting as a rogue state—a lawless robber and murderer. As a U.S. citizen, it’s both my right and my duty to oppose this.

Well said, Mary! It's ridiculous that we have to say it, but the goals of the anti-genocide protest are essentially "follow the law." As you said, that would mean stop arming Israel via the Leahy Law, and comply with international sanctions.

That dynamic really shows how far-gone the establishment position is.

A vote for Dr. Jill Stein will send the message that no matter how much the MSM suppresses the anti-imperialist voices, we are here, and we are many. Let's show them just how strong we are. Just imagine how you will feel when you see the vote totals in the tens of millions for Stein. Amazing, and powerful!

Now, imagine you see the same old, same old...

It really is up to us!

Very conflicted on the protest vote, personally it depends on if your vote matters or not in deciding the election. As my state’s outcome is decided, my vote is a vote against genocide, but it would be more difficult to make that decision under different circumstances

Remind me: what did that accomplish in 2016?

Kamala took 5 million dollars from AIPAC. If she doesn't care about Palestinian people she certainly doesn't care about anyone else. I wouldn't let har babysit my child, I'm certainly not voting for her.

I'm curious to see how AIPAC funds the Trump v. Harris race. Given that both candidates are sympathetic to Israel, I wouldn't be surprised if they pulled back and focused on down-ballot races.

Excellent point! Exactly. You could be right. AIPAC had no issues going after Cori Bush and Bowman. Time to pop over to:

Although Gaza is the most urgent issue, and we cannot turn our eyes from them, there is increasing settler violence and land confiscation in the West Bank, aka illegally Occupied Territory. Here’s a group we can support, made up of committed Israelis and Palestinians working together to protect the Palestinians there.

Great point, Joy. Israel has used the Gazan crisis to increase its colonization of the West Bank. A vastly undercovered story, IMO.

There must be an immediate ceasefire in Gaza. Pope Francis has said what is needed, now he must do what is needed by going to Gaza and standing for peace, justice and freedom.

Please sign the petition and share widely.

Let us also support UNRWA. If our governments won’t act in accordance with humanity, then we will. https://www.unrwausa.org/donate

Also we can all support the brave doctors who have gone to Gaza: https://palestinian-ama.networkforgood.com/projects/206145-gaza-medical-supplies-oct-2023

Or

Biden is responsible for this and many other atrocities Israelis have been committing since time immemorial. He is, and always has been a mad dog Zionist, he is in politics for decades! During Obama’s presidency he gave cover for the war criminal Netanyahu to continue building the illegal settlements in the Occupied Territories. I mean, he literally is a co-sponsor of this genocide of the Palestinians.

Very much so. Even in his Senate days, he was a staunch Zionist. His political strategy has been to center himself in the context of the Democratic party, with the exception of Israel. He's been hard-right on the issue for years.

Since when does 80 years qualify as “since time immemorial”?

Expand full comment

Theory of relativity. In this day and age, when every politician does a non-stop lip service to "Universal human rights", "Democracy is at stake", I consider 80 years as time immemorial since I don't see Biden's wanna be successors moving away from his legacy of genocide.

I get it—you’re painting expressively with your words; I do that all the time.

But there are some topics where being careful and precise with your language is Important and “detailing Israeli crimes against humanity” is one of those.

I couldn't, unfortunately. But I've been catching up through the day. My immediate reaction is that I'm energized by Fain's labor speech, but disheartened AOC didn't call for Harris to act on Gaza.

I believe AOC didn't because she knew that last night Bernie Sanders did. Give his speech a listen.

Genocide is bad and the Gaza protests are cool and good, but “I refuse to defend myself from fascism because…” is a pretty clown-shoes position regardless of what follows the “because”.

(The above should not be construed to imply that I think that Joe holds said clown-shoes position. He explicitly doesn’t.)

The Dems whole platform last night was reproductive freedom (not body autonomy obviously since their administration mandated lockdowns and vaccines which continue to cause devastation to people's lives). That's their strength in a nut shell. They have nothing else but great speeches. Still no real policies on paper to see, and scrutinize how they plan to fund all their promises. Administration after administration, war after war, we all deserve better.

Where was this zeal for Ukraine. Oh wait, I remember, you tried blaming "American Capitalism" for the Russian empire's attempted conquest of a sovereign state, likened Ukraine to a failed state with no ethnic identity in a bid to compare it to Afghanistan--despite its military doing the vast brunt of fighting against Putin's army, and proceeded to claim you wouldn't support Eastern Europe's fight were it invaded by Russia--even though Most Americans support NATO.

https://www.joewrote.com/p/a-quick-thought-on-nato?utm_source=profile&utm_medium=reader2https://substack.com/@joewrote/p-49195155

NATO: https://www.pewresearch.org/global/2024/05/08/americans-opinions-of-nato/

Its inspiring to see the American far-left continue to support Palestine, when it refuses to do the same with Eastern Europe. And this does not, in any way, come across as hypocritical to that part of the world where your ideology failed us.

And that's not the only place. Where are your words for Nagorno-Karabakh, where 100,000 Armenians fled. You've spoken of the peril of Palestine after Hamas foolishly attacked Israel on October 7th, but no words are given to the 2024 Venezuelan Election, where before us a man DSA has supported stole an election so fraudulently, most of Latin America simply has refused to accept the government's claim he won. It seems you have preciously little sympathy for anyone who isn't broadly attached to "The West" (or whatever you personally call it), otherwise the 10%-18% of the cuban population who left the island after the 2021 protests were quashed would have had a post given your category of "Discussions of Current Events."

The American Far Left does not, and never has had, a vice-grip on morality. Maybe you can try to fool yourself into thinking that by believing that its changed since the 20th century and no longer blindly falls for lies pushed by men like PolPot , but given how it conducts itself on anything foreign-policy related, I suspect it hasn't. Maybe you should write about all the ways it failed to act morally, if you want to live up to your goal of presenting "A unique leftist take."

Expand full comment

Not a genocide. Thanks. I know the pro-Hamas left really really want it to be a genocide so they can feel all righteous and get to virtue signal even harder to their fake friends on the Internet but it isn't. Too bad for them.

You also have to ask yourself why the pro-Hamas left is willing to sacrifice all their principles to support Hamas, an Islamist death cult that could give two shits about the Palestinians and seeks to create a worldwide caliphate free of Jews and Christians while keeping its religio-fascist boot firmly on the Palestinian neck

The biggest joke in the world is that the pro-Hamas left wants freedom for the Palestinians. There is no freedim under Hamas and Islamism. While these poseurs are perfectly willing to condemn Palestinians to living in Hamastan under Hamas rules, not a one of them would live for a single second in Hamastan under Hamas rules. This double standard makes all of them utter assholes.

To the pro-Hamas left;

1. Rape is bad, except when Islamists do it to Yazidis or jews or anyone really.

2. Gender Apartheid is bad, except when Islamists do it.

3. Gay bigotry is bad, except when Islamists dleft.

4. Ethnic cleansing is bad, except when Islamists do it.

4. Religious coercion is bad, except when Islamists do it.

ETC., ETC., ETC.

Free Palestine from Hamas and their lickspittles on the keft.
