Hey folks!
I’m excited to bring you today’s post. I had the pleasure of interviewing Matt McManus, a University of Michigan lecturer who has written numerous books on socialism in the 21st century. Matt’s latest book, The Political Theory of Liberal Socialism, explores the socialist liberal tradition of thinkers such as Mary Wollstonecraft, Thomas Paine, and John Stuart Mill. The book is out now, and I highly encourage you to grab your copy before it sells out.
The Political Theory of Liberal Socialism by Matt McManus
I wanted to talk to Matt because his ideas challenged my understanding of liberalism and socialism. I’ve always considered these ideologies to be at odds, so I sat down with Matt to hear his thoughts on how liberalism and socialism are not only compatible but, in many ways, collaborative.
We discussed:
The history of liberal socialism,
It’s relationship to Marxism,
How liberal socialists view a path to power, and
How liberal socialists view contemporary socialist states such as China, Norway, etc.
This was a lot of fun to record, so I hope you enjoy it!
If you prefer to read rather than listen, I’ve added the transcript.
In Solidarity — Joe
